Greenhouse gas emissions are increasing at a very rapid pace and the global climate will suffer if immediate action is not taken. Bringing Carbon, Capture, and Storage (CCS) to a commercially viable level is necessary in order for Europe to comply with 2020 Kyoto protocol targets set to reduce these emissions.

As a world leader in Renewable Energy, Europe is striving to contribute to providing clean and sustainable technologies that will secure energy supplies while also reducing carbon emissions for the future. But, it is also a well known fact that Renewable Energy projects will take some time to provide the results expected and 2020 targets appear quite unreachable for Renewable Energy investment and development alone.

This realisation that action must be taken now has given new hope for clean fossil fuel production processes. CCS is the medium term solution, making it possible for fossil fuel producers and power utilities to use these resources and emit very low carbon emissions and perhaps even reach the goal of zero emissions production. New resources can readily be made available once the technology has been approved of and many plants can be retrofitted to CCS standards.

It is just as important now for financial providers to invest in CCS technology as it is for them to think about long term Renewable Energy production. As there is no denying that fossil fuels have a large part to play in the coming years this need for the advancement of CCS technology is very real. Legislation must be put in place and incentives must be made in order to allow for the proper deployment of CCS in the short time frame available.
