EastEuro Link hosted its 3rd Annual CEE Air Transport conference in Poland on 7th April 2008. Taking place in Warsaw Hyatt Hotel, the event was supported by a host of associate sponsors and media partners involved in the air transport industry.
Proceedings were opened by the chairman, Mr. David Henderson, Manager Information of the Association of the European Airlines, who began with the updated economic indicators for the regional countries and a brief on the key issues airlines have to address today.
Mr. Aadu Lee, Secretary General of East European Air Transport Association presented specific circumstances in the EU aviation legal framework and aviation society that are affecting development of small and medium-size air carriers in the states of the East Europe.
Then Mr. John Blanchfield, Director Technical Marketing of Airbus addressed one of the most important aviation’s ongoing challenges which results from the need of meeting increasing demand for air transport and the need of addressing environmental concerns. He gave very interesting presentation on the Airbus way to eco efficiency.
After a lively networking break, the session on today’s airports’ challenges brought expert speakers line-up including: Mr. Kamil Kaminski, President of the Krakow Airport, Mr. Peder Grunditz and Mr Olle Sundin of LVF Group, Mr. Mathew Finn, Director Government and Security of SITA and Mr. Remigiusz Kobierski, Director of Value Management Bureau of Polish Airports. The most up to date topics were addressed such as airports marketing challenges in the light of the investment strategy and capacity requirements, then very interesting ABC business model for small and medium sized airports. The impact of security and border control regulations on the airports and the airlines was also discussed and the extent to which the airports respond to the needs of airlines and passengers.

The afternoon session turned the attention of the audience towards the transforming market. Mr. Michael Gaebler, CEO of Aviareps spoke about market dynamics and where does the development of the CEE aviation market leads to, introducing very interesting comparison to the evolution processes: “Survived have only those, who were able to adjust to evolutionary processes and trends”.
Mr. Piotr Samson, Marketing Director of PLL LOT examined the role of hubs and global airline alliances for the CEE Market Integration. The conference chairman, Mr. David Henderson then spoke about strategic direction of the industry focusing on the question: network carriers or low-cost?
The issues of the air cargo in larger Europe were also included in the conference programme, presented by Mr. Eddy Raes, Vice President, Product Management Airfreight Europe, DB Schenker AG and Mr. Sebastian Scholte, Head of Marketing and Special projects of Cargolux Airlines. They agreed that generally air cargo market is expected to continue the steady growth for the next 20 years although there are some market indicators that can have an adverse impact or slow down the growth.
Finally, Mr. William Caplan, Engineering Consultant of NIRCM introduced the topic which was quite new for the participants: protecting the aircraft in flight, examining some equipment options and alternatives for on-board and ground-based systems.
The conference was concluded with more networking opportunities at the cocktail reception where the participants were able to continue discussion in a more relaxing environment.
The event brought together a number of influential players in the CEE Air Transport to engage in numerous discussions and listen to some excellent insights into the sector. EastEuro Link thanks all delegates and speakers who attended the event and made this conference an enjoyable experience.
