Given the current economic situation spanning much of the globe, the successful management of a supply chain is playing an even more vital role in minimising costs as well as increasing a company's market value. With a unique focus on the CEE Region, Supply Chain Management 2009 Conference, held in Bucharest on 29th May 2009 offered a definitive guide to this dynamic sector. The excellent panel of speakers, made up of leading industry professionals, explored the most important aspects of this dynamic and evolving marketplace.

Mr. Robin Martens, Director General at Archicom SRL, introduced the conference and chaired the event excellently throughout the day in a friendly and constructive atmosphere.

The first speaker to take stand was Mr. Iulian Circiumaru, Consultant at AT Kearny, with a rich history of work experience in supply chain and procurement. He provided an excellent overview of available tools for gaining competitive advantage through supply chain management, and also in highlighting implications for Romania. Following a dynamic discussion, Dr. Isaac Sheps, CEO of Carlsberg UK Ltd, gave a presentation on the supply chain management as an overall business scheme, inspiring a series of questions from the audience. The discussion continued during the networking coffee break allowing participants the opportunity to widen their business network and enjoy the exhibition viewing.




Another important topic covered in the morning session was supply chain sustainability. Mr. David Symons, Director at WSP Environment and Energy provided useful examples and analysis on ensuring the supply chain is both profitable and sustainable. This was followed by presentation on sustainability and risk mitigation strategies, given by Mr. Douglas Kent, Founder and President of eKNOWtion. To conclude the morning session, Mr. Kurt Weber, Managing Director at Horvath & Partners, spoke about opportunities and challenges of transforming traditional Romanian purchasing departments into world-class procurement organizations. He also presented a case study on the procurement transformation in oil companies.

Following the lunch break where delegates had an additional opportunity to network, Mr. Christoph Lenhartz, Managing Consultant at Vistem gave a significant contribution to the conference agenda, offering answers to the question 'How to build a decisive competitive edge across Supply Chain'.

Mr. Stephan Pique, European Director EPC/RFID at GS1 Europe then addressed the issue of increasing product visibility with the use of ID technologies. He said that visibility would enable companies to support their ever increasing complexity in supply chains, presenting practical examples from various industry sectors. Mr. Valentin Popescu, Programmes Manager at GS1 Romania, elaborated on GS1 support of supply chain excellence in implementation support, certification, operational support, consultancy and representation in order to help the companies with improvement of efficiency and visibility.



The afternoon refreshment and networking break was followed by vivid presentation given by Mr. Christian Verstraete, Chief Technology Officer at Hewlett Packard, who spoke about balancing lean and risk management. He highlighted the importance of looking at supply chain holistically, of understanding what is really happening along the supply chain and of implementing an integrated information environment.

To conclude this highly informative day, Mr. Robin Martens focused on Romania as a future CEE supply chain hub, providing a most useful and detailed overview of both positive and negative factors. He also summarised the wide range of ideas and discussions that had taken place throughout the day.
