The solar market in Central Eastern Europe (CEE) has seen a surge this year as countries continue to look for renewable resources to reduce harmful emissions and abide by the expectations for clean energy set on International and European levels. Our CEE Solar event held in Athens on Friday June 26th 2009 established strong ties between some of the most influential market leaders. Held in the beautiful Park Athens Hotel in Greece, this was an event which was not to be missed.
Our event was chaired by the very charismatic Mr. Jerry Stokes, president of SunTech Europe. He opened the day by introducing our line up of international keynote speakers and by providing an initial address for the day’s events. The first presentation was provided by Mr. Francesco D’Avack who works as a European solar analyst at New Energy Finance. He provided a detailed outlook into current global, European, and regional actions taking place in the solar, thermal and photovoltaic marketplace. Ms. Christine Brockwell, vice president of Global Capital Finance followed and gave an in depth analysis of solar project investment and effects of the recent economic climate. The next presentation delved into the subject of the attractive solar market versus its poor position on the supply curve. It was Dr. Wolfgang Pospischil, director at Poyry Energy Group who spoke on this most intriguing topic and ended the first quarter of the day.

Following a very lively morning networking coffee break in which speakers and delegates joined to discuss the market and share opinions and views, the participants re-united for the next round of presentations. Our chairman Mr. Jerry Stokes began guiding the audience into looking at ways to ensure grid parity. Ms. Rosi Christodoulaki from CRES began the panel on innovation and technology on the topic of the solar cooling market and its applications in the EU. Mr. Marco Coletta from DuPont Photovoltaic Solutions followed with an intriguing report of innovation in solar PV modules. Mr. Thierry Bodiot a CEO at Heliosphera provided a complimenting presentation on micromorph thin film technology. This presentation led up to the networking lunch break where all participants discussed the morning’s events over lunch.
The second half of the day began with Dr. Ronald Lange, head of innovation at 3S Swiss Solar Systems who informed the audience of the latest technology of solar module manufacturing. His discussion was developed upon by Dr. Evangelos Zoidis, CTO at SolarTec who provided an analysis of the deployment potential for Solar PV into the CEE region. Mr. Panagiotis Sarris, Managing Director at juwi Hellas was next to provide insight into utility scale PV. Mr. Alessandro Marsilio, Rooftop Systems Director at Solon was next to take stand and share his strategy of reducing project costs and optimising efficiency. Participants then proceeded to gather for afternoon coffee.

The room filled for a final time and participants gave their attention to Mr. Christoph Lenhartz a managing consultant at Vistem who shared his thoughts on building a decisive competitive edge in the solar project business. Ms. Marina Kolia, head of energy law group at Zepos & Yannopoulos proceeded by giving a presentation on the legal regime for solar parks in Greece. The final presentation of the day illustrated the market for industrial PV activity in Greece and Bulgaria. This presentation ended the day and conference attendees then had a chance to congregate at our evening cocktail reception.
We look forward to our future cooperation!
