EastEuro Link hosted its CEE Telecoms 2010 event the 27th & 28th of January in Bucharest, Romania. Once again the conference was an excellent platform for all industry professionals working in the market to share their market experiences and knowledge and to look forward at the potential for the year ahead.

The conference was opened and chaired by the charismatic Mr. Christian Niegel Principle at Arthur D. Little. He provided initial welcoming remarks and opened the day by welcoming all delegates and introducing speakers.

The first speaker was Mr. Rupert Wood a Principal Analyst at Analysys Mason Ltd in the United Kingdom who discussed the interplay between fixed and mobile broadband in CEE. The next speaker was Mr. Fabio del Alisal the Head of International Department from CMT who spoke on Regulation for Mobile Access.

Following a question and answer section, conference participants gathered for a Networking Break where they met their new acquaintances and discussed more about the morning’s presentations.

After this break Mr. Ulrich Stumpf a Director and Head of the Department Regulation and Competition from WIK took to the stand and provided his insight into regulating FTTx networks under the EU regulatory framework and the way forward for this.

Mr. Jan Dittrich a Regional Sales Director of Telefónica International Wholesale Services from Telefonica O2 in Czech Republic was next to discuss the opportunities in the telecoms sector in CEE and Romania and how to overcome the recession and increase returns.

Next came an hour long lunch break which provided a more informal and relaxed setting for networking opportunities and further discussion between event attendees. Following this intermission, Mr. Ali Taskin a CEO at Eagle Mobile in Albania look specifically at how to determine market dominance with a focus on the Albanian Telecom market and Eagle Mobile’s progress in the market as a monopoly breaker. The next presentation came from Mr. Christof Kern a Senior Manager at SES Astra S.A. who informed the audience of the role of satellite in media, on broadband markets and on converged networks including IPTV case studies.

Another networking coffee break pursued before Mr. Wandrille Pruvot a VP Sales and Marketing & Regional Director for Europe from BuzzCity Pte Ltd who reviewed how mobile advertising is gaining ground in CEE. The final session looked into service based ecosystems and green access technologies. How to secure fast returns during a time of crisis and the new internet ecosystems was the topic addressed by Mr. Jan Larsson the Senior Strategy & Corporate Development Manager from Teliasonera International Carrier. The final presentation was made by Mr. Thomas Kallstenius a Director of Product Marketing and Wireline at Alcatel Lucent who looked at eco-efficient access and the case for ‘green’ access technologies. The first day of the conference was brought to an end by Mr. Niegel before winding down at a Gala Cocktail Reception.

The second day was again begun by Mr. Niegel and the first speaker to take the stand was Mr. Vladan Aleksic the Head of Internet and Data Transmission from SBB Serbia Broadband who reviewed newly established opportunities in the Serbian Telecom market.

The next speaker Mr. Ola Korsmo a Market Director from Telenor Global Services in Norway discussed next generation network services based on IPX and IMS. All conference participants then proceeded to the networking room for a brief interval before the conference congregated for the second half of the morning’s presentations. Dr. Sarath Kumar who deals with VP Engineering at Tejas Networks in India then presented on the evolution of hybrid networks. Mr. Zeljko Popovic Strategic Solution Manager from Ericsson Nikola Tesla spoke about the GPON evolution towards next generation PON. The final presenter was conference chair Mr. Niegel who shared his views on FTTX business models before ending the day with his closing remarks before a final networking lunch break.
